This article provides comprehensive guidance on the crucial questions to consider before hiring a tree removal service. Trees are not only beautiful and beneficial to the environment but can also pose certain risks when not properly managed. The decision to remove a tree from your property can arise from safety concerns, disease, or development plans. It's crucial to be well-informed about the tree removal process to ensure it is handled safely and efficiently. By understanding the factors involved, you can ensure a smooth, safe, and cost-effective process.

Certification and Credentials

Certified arborists bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the tree removal process. Unlike general workers, certified arborists undergo rigorous training and testing by recognized bodies such as the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). Hiring certified professionals implies adherence to industry standards, ensuring that your trees are evaluated and removed safely and effectively. In addition to this, certified arborists are equipped to handle any complications that may arise during the process, reducing the risk of property damage and personal injury. Always verify the credentials of the professionals you plan to hire to make sure you're getting quality service.

Verification of credentials is a key step in choosing a tree removal service. Ensure they have relevant certifications like those from the ISA, which signifies their competence in tree care. Additionally, a valid business license demonstrates their compliance with state and local regulations. Confirming these credentials not only offers peace of mind but also protects you legally. Knowing they abide by the latest industry standards guarantees that the work will be performed with a higher level of professionalism and safety.

Gathering customer feedback is invaluable when selecting a tree removal service. References from past clients provide insights into the company's reliability, quality of work, and overall customer satisfaction. Online reviews available on platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau can highlight common strengths or weaknesses. Though reviews can be subjective, consistent positive feedback is a good indicator of a reputable company. Conversely, repeated negative comments about issues like poor communication or incomplete projects should raise concerns.

Cost and Estimates

Understanding what an estimate includes is critical for avoiding unexpected expenses. A comprehensive estimate should detail each component of the job, from cutting and removal to stump grinding, debris disposal, and clean-up. Clarity in pricing elements helps you compare quotes more effectively and make informed decisions. Ensure the company is transparent about what is included and seek clarification for any ambiguities. A clear estimate facilitates budget planning and minimizes the risk of financial surprises.

Hidden fees can arise unexpectedly, impacting your budget significantly. By asking directly about additional costs, such as permits or equipment charges, you can clarify any extra expenses that might not be immediately obvious. Some companies might charge more for emergency services or navigating through challenging terrains. Knowing these potential costs upfront can help you negotiate and decide on the services that fit your budget. Transparency fosters trust, ensuring your experience is straightforward and free of surprises.

The cost of tree removal can vary due to several factors such as tree size, location, and complexity. Larger trees naturally require more time and manpower to remove, whereas trees located near structures or power lines necessitate additional caution and equipment. Evaluating these elements helps in providing an accurate quote and anticipating the timeline. A detailed understanding of these cost influences can aid in choosing the right service for your needs and budget.

Safety and Insurance

Lack of proper insurance coverage can leave you vulnerable to financial liabilities in case of accidents. Tree removal is inherently risky, and the presence of liability insurance assures you that any damage to your property will be covered. It also safeguards you from potential lawsuits arising from injuries incurred by the workers on your premises. Always ask for a certificate of insurance and verify its validity with the issuing company. Confirming adequate coverage protects your investments and ensures peace of mind throughout the process.

Implementing robust safety measures is paramount for any tree removal service. This involves employees utilizing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, gloves, and harnesses. Adherence to industry safety standards mitigates the risk of accidents and injuries on your property. Additionally, companies should prepare contingency plans for unexpected emergencies. An emphasis on safety protocols reassures that the team prioritizes wellbeing and executes the task professionally.

Requesting proof of insurance is a prudent step in the vetting process. When a company is hesitant to provide this information, it's a potential red flag. Verify the insurance policy details shared with you, such as coverage limits and expiration dates, with the insurance provider directly. This verification step helps ensure you won't be held accountable for any mishaps during the tree removal process. By confirming insurance details, you protect your property and reduce liability risks.

Schedules and Deadlines

Understanding the project's duration helps you plan around the removal process. The timeline can vary widely based on factors such as the size and type of tree, as well as its location on your property. Experienced companies will assess these factors and provide an estimated timeframe. According to This Old House, tree removal can take as little as 15 minutes or extend to several hours. Clear communication with the service provider will keep you informed and help manage your expectations.

Timeliness is often a decisive factor in choosing a tree removal service. During the consultation, inquire about their current workload and availability to determine how soon they can address your needs. Some companies might have a waiting list, especially during peak seasons. If time is of the essence, discussing their schedule in advance can help you align expectations with your timeline. A prompt and committed start date reflects a company's professionalism and consideration for client priorities.

Sometimes, unexpected situations require urgent tree removal due to storm damage or immediate safety threats. It's important to know if the company offers emergency services and the associated costs. Emergency responses typically incur additional fees, reflecting the expedited nature of the work. Understanding your options in this regard helps prepare for unforeseen circumstances. Emergency service availability is an additional factor that can enhance a company's reliability and flexibility.

          Environmental Issues and Concerns

Environmental responsibility is increasingly important in the tree removal industry. When choosing a service, inquire about any eco-friendly practices such as using alternative fuels and minimizing chemical usage. Some companies prioritize sustainable methods, such as tree transplantation or repurposing wood and debris. Opting for services with green credentials supports the broader goal of environmental conservation. Responsible companies provide options that align with ecological preservation values.

Post-removal debris management varies depending on company practices. Some services might offer recycling options, turning debris into mulch or firewood, reducing landfill waste. Other companies may engage in responsible disposal methods emphasizing minimal environmental impact. Clarifying these practices can affirm a company's commitment to sustainability. Understanding disposal methods also ensures your alignment with environmentally conscious practices.

Minimizing environmental impact is vital during tree removal projects. Companies can adopt various practices, such as preventing soil erosion or protecting the surrounding vegetation. Furthermore, they might implement cautious measures when using machinery to avoid unnecessary ecological damage. These efforts not only protect the immediate surroundings but also promote long-term landscape health. By choosing companies prioritizing minimal environmental impact, you contribute to broader conservation efforts.

What to Expect During a Professional Tree Removal Service

Worried about a risky tree? See exactly how the pros handle tree removal from safety checks to cleanup so you can feel totally confident.

Understanding what to expect from a professional tree removal service helps homeowners and property managers feel confident throughout the process. Whether a tree poses a safety hazard, has been affected by disease, or simply needs to come down for practical reasons, engaging professionals ensures the job is handled safely and efficiently.

          Consult and Assess the Site

The process begins with an initial consultation where an arborist learns about your specific situation and reasons for removal. This conversation helps the professional tailor their approach to your property's unique needs and conditions. A thorough site inspection follows, during which the arborist evaluates the tree's health, size, and proximity to structures, utility lines, and other potential hazards. According to the National Storm Damage Center, falling trees are the leading cause of roof damage, responsible for more than $1 billion in property damage annually, which underscores why a careful and detailed site assessment is so critical.

Risk evaluation is a key part of this phase, identifying challenges such as nearby power lines or underground utilities so that the safest removal strategy can be developed. The arborist will also take note of soil conditions, surrounding vegetation, and access points that could affect how the job is approached. Once all factors have been carefully considered, the team will schedule the service at a time that works for you and accounts for weather conditions and equipment availability. Taking the time to get this phase right sets the tone for a smooth and successful tree removal experience.

          Prepare the Site and Crew

Before removal begins, the crew clears the surrounding area of obstructions to ensure safe machinery access and protect existing landscape features. Pathways are mapped out so that equipment can reach the tree without causing unnecessary disruption to your yard or garden. Tools and equipment — which may include chainsaws, cranes, and wood chippers — are assembled and thoroughly inspected to confirm they are in proper working order. This level of preparation minimizes delays once active work begins and helps the team maintain a steady, efficient pace throughout the job.

Every crew member is equipped with mandatory protective gear, including hard hats, gloves, and safety goggles, in full compliance with industry safety standards. The team leader then briefs the crew on the job plan, individual roles, and emergency procedures so that everyone is aligned before work begins. Contingency plans are also established to address potential complications such as sudden weather changes or unexpected structural issues with the tree. This preparation phase reflects the professionalism and attention to detail that distinguishes a qualified tree removal service from one that cuts corners.

          Execute the Removal

The actual removal is carried out using techniques selected based on the tree's size, species, and location. Sectional dismantling is commonly used in tighter spaces, allowing crews to cut the tree into manageable sections rather than felling it in one motion. Large trees may require cranes or bucket trucks to ensure controlled lowering and prevent damage to adjacent structures. The team carefully coordinates the timing and direction of each cut to ensure the safety of both crew members and surrounding property throughout the operation.

Once the main structure of the tree is down, attention turns to stump removal, which can be completed through grinding or full extraction depending on your long-term plans for the area. Stump grinding reduces the stump to ground level and is ideal when replanting or lawn restoration is planned, while full extraction removes both the stump and root system for more extensive site development. Your arborist will recommend the most appropriate method based on your property goals and site conditions. Throughout this entire phase, precision and strong crew coordination are essential to a safe and successful tree removal outcome.

Clean Up and Restore the Site

Following removal, the crew collects and disposes of all branches, logs, and debris, leaving your property clean and safe. Many professional services offer environmentally responsible disposal options such as converting wood waste into mulch, compost, or firewood, reducing the overall environmental footprint of the project. Clients who wish to retain some of the wood for personal use, such as for firewood, can often make that arrangement with the service provider in advance. Responsible debris management is a hallmark of a professional tree removal company that takes pride in the condition in which it leaves your property.

Land restoration efforts, including filling holes and smoothing terrain left behind after stump removal, help return the site to a functional and attractive condition. Some providers go a step further by seeding bare areas with grass or applying topsoil to support healthy regrowth. A final walkthrough is then conducted to confirm that all work has been completed to the agreed standard and that the site meets your expectations. Client approval at the end of this process ensures every concern has been addressed and that you are fully satisfied before the job is considered complete.

          Navigate Permits and Local Regulations

Tree removal is subject to local regulations and municipal codes that vary by region, particularly in environmentally sensitive or urban areas. These rules may govern when and how trees can be removed, and some municipalities require documentation or justification before a permit is issued. Securing the proper permits before work begins is essential to staying compliant with local laws and avoiding potential fines or legal complications. A knowledgeable tree service will guide you through the permit application process and ensure all work aligns with applicable environmental and safety standards.

Beyond permits, compliance with protected species laws and preservation ordinances is equally important and reflects a commitment to responsible environmental stewardship. Notifying neighbors in advance is also a courteous and practical step that helps manage expectations, minimize disruption, and maintain positive community relations. Experienced providers understand the local regulatory landscape and proactively handle compliance on your behalf, giving you peace of mind throughout the project. Working with a provider who takes these responsibilities seriously protects both you and your community from unnecessary risk or liability.

          Anticipate and Overcome Common Challenges

Even well-planned removal projects can encounter unexpected challenges, and experienced professionals are prepared to adapt when they arise. Adverse weather, confined spaces near structures or power lines, and hidden underground utilities are among the most common obstacles teams face on the job. Skilled arborists conduct thorough pre-job evaluations to anticipate these issues and develop contingency plans before work begins. A team that approaches challenges with flexibility and sound judgment helps ensure the project stays on track regardless of what comes up.

Clear and consistent communication between the service provider and the client is equally important, ensuring that any changes or concerns are addressed promptly and transparently. If unexpected complications are discovered mid-project, a reputable provider will explain the situation clearly and outline the best path forward before proceeding. Regular updates throughout the process keep you informed and in control of decisions that affect your property. A professional removal team handles every challenge with skill, accountability, and an unwavering commitment to your safety and satisfaction.

Tree trimming may seem like a simple household task, but it involves complexities and safety considerations that often go unnoticed. Many homeowners believe they can handle trimming themselves; however, DIY efforts carry serious risks, including injury, property damage, and long-term harm to trees. Understanding these risks and recognizing the expertise that professional tree companies provide can help homeowners make informed decisions.

          1. Understanding the Risks of DIY Tree Trimming

          A. Physical Hazards

Tree trimming involves more than cutting branches; it demands balance, precision, and awareness. Falls from ladders or heights are common without proper support. Misusing chainsaws or saws can result in severe injuries. These hazards affect not only the person trimming but also anyone nearby, making DIY efforts potentially dangerous.

          B. Environmental Risks

Improper trimming can harm trees and surrounding ecosystems. Amateur techniques may damage trees permanently, reduce their lifespan, or spread disease to healthy plants. Understanding tree biology is critical; neglecting this can compromise both the tree and the local environment.

          C. Lack of Proper Equipment

Professional tree trimmers use specialized tools like pole pruners, safety harnesses, and ladders. Homeowners without these tools risk incomplete or unsafe work. Using the wrong equipment can increase accidents and reduce trimming efficiency.

          D. Insufficient Training

Professionals possess training and experience that ensure proper techniques and judgment. They know various tree species, how they grow, and how to trim them safely. DIY attempts often overlook these critical factors, leading to mistakes and hazards. Hiring a trained tree company ensures quality work is done the first time.

          E. Legal Implications

DIY trimming can also involve legal risks. Homeowners may unknowingly violate local ordinances or homeowners’ association rules. Accidents causing injury or property damage can result in liability issues. Professional tree companies are insured and comply with local regulations, reducing legal risks and providing peace of mind.

          2. Benefits of Hiring Professional Tree Trimmers

          A. Expert Knowledge and Skills

Professional tree companies bring specialized expertise to every job. They understand tree biology and growth patterns, enabling cuts that promote health and longevity. They can identify disease or decay early, something amateurs may miss. This expertise ensures effective trimming while reducing risks.

          B. Access to Specialized Equipment

Professionals use advanced tools, including chainsaws, pole pruners, and cranes for high branches. These tools ensure clean cuts and efficient work, which would be difficult or unsafe for homeowners attempting DIY trimming. Proper tools also make the process cost-effective over time.

          C. Safety Protocols

Professional services follow strict safety protocols. Risk assessments, protective gear, and emergency procedures minimize hazards. This adherence to safety ensures that tree trimming is conducted efficiently while protecting both workers and property.

          D. Efficient and Effective Service

Professionals complete tasks faster without sacrificing quality. What might take an amateur an entire weekend can be done in hours by experts. They also provide thorough clean-up, leaving properties safe and tidy. Efficiency combined with experience ensures the tree’s health is preserved.

          E. Long-term Tree Health

Proper trimming maintains the structural integrity and longevity of trees. Professionals perform targeted cuts that reduce disease risk and strengthen the tree. Poor trimming can weaken trees, making them susceptible to pests or storm damage. Using a tree company ensures sustainable growth and a healthier ecosystem.

          3. Cost Analysis: DIY vs. Professional Services

          A. Initial Cost Comparison

Hiring a professional tree company may seem expensive initially, but it covers labor, expertise, and equipment. DIY efforts often require renting or purchasing tools, adding hidden costs that may exceed professional service fees. Professionals provide comprehensive solutions, including trimming and debris removal.

          B. Hidden Costs and Risks

Mistakes during DIY trimming can result in property damage, tree loss, or personal injury, all of which carry high costs. Professional services are insured, covering such risks within the service charge and avoiding unexpected financial burdens.

          C. Long-term Financial Implications

Professional tree care can prevent future expenses. Healthy, well-maintained trees add property value and require less frequent intervention. Professionals also provide guidance on tree care, reducing long-term costs through preventive strategies.

          D. Value of Investment

Investing in a professional tree company offers peace of mind and reliable results. Guarantees, follow-ups, and consistent care improve both aesthetics and safety. The long-term benefits extend beyond financial considerations, ensuring healthier trees and safer environments.

          E. Insurance and Liability

Professional tree companies carry insurance, protecting clients from liability in case of accidents or damage. DIY attempts expose homeowners to financial responsibility for injuries or property damage, making professional services a safer investment overall.

4. Real-life Stories and Case Studies

          A. Accidents from DIY Attempts

Numerous incidents illustrate the dangers of DIY trimming, from severe falls to property damage. Near-misses highlight how quickly things can go wrong without professional oversight. These examples reinforce why safety and expertise are essential.

          B. Success Stories from Professionals

Professional interventions often save trees damaged by improper trimming. In cases of diseased or hazardous branches, experts remove threats safely and efficiently, restoring tree health and aesthetics. Such successes demonstrate the tangible benefits of hiring a tree company.

          C. Client Testimonials

Clients often praise professional services for efficiency, thorough clean-up, and shared knowledge about tree care. Satisfied customers note the value of safety, quality, and communication, reinforcing the advantages of professional over DIY services.

          D. Lessons from Tragedies

Tragic DIY accidents underscore the importance of professional training, proper equipment, and safety adherence. These events highlight the risks of ignoring expertise and the necessity of using insured professionals for tree care.

          E. Community and Environmental Impact

Professional tree trimming enhances neighborhoods and environmental health. Healthy trees improve aesthetics, increase property values, and support local biodiversity. Tree companies often educate communities on sustainable care, promoting ecological stewardship beyond individual properties.

          5. Evaluating Professional Tree Trimming Services

          A. Choosing the Right Provider

Selecting a tree company requires evaluating reputation, experience, and service scope. Transparent pricing and clear communication indicate a reliable provider. Matching the company’s expertise to specific tree types ensures safe and satisfactory results.

          B. Credentials and Certifications

Credentials and certifications, such as from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), reflect professional knowledge and adherence to safety standards. Certified tree companies demonstrate commitment to quality and competence.

          C. Understanding Services and Pricing

Tree companies offer varied packages, from basic trimming to comprehensive tree assessments and disease treatments. Transparent pricing ensures clients understand costs upfront, avoiding surprises while aligning services with needs.

          D. Customer Service

Effective communication, responsiveness, and post-service support are vital. Strong customer service ensures satisfaction and reliability, reflecting a company’s commitment to excellence.

When and Why to Hire a Tree Trimming Service for Your Yard

Tree companies can help you to make your yard the aesthetic and cleanliness that you desire. Here are some great reasons to hire them.

Understanding the importance of maintaining trees in your yard can lead to healthier trees and a more appealing landscape. Trees are not only vital for the environment, providing oxygen and improving air quality, but they also enhance the visual appeal of your property. However, without proper care, trees can become overgrown, diseased, or dangerous. In this article, we will explore when it’s time to call in professional tree companies and the reasons they are essential for comprehensive tree care.

How to Determine if Your Trees Need Trimming

1.1 Signs Your Tree Needs Trimming

Trees can exhibit several signs that indicate they need trimming. Overgrown branches that extend over the roof, power lines, or hang too low over walkways can be hazardous. Additionally, dead or decaying branches are not only unsightly but also pose a significant risk of falling unexpectedly. Observing these signs can help you determine when it might be necessary to call in tree companies.

Another sign that trimming is required is the tree’s overall health and shape. If your tree has uneven growth, or if certain limbs are growing more extensively than others, it may lead to structural imbalance. This can cause stress on the tree’s trunk and roots, potentially leading to more severe problems. Professional tree trimming can help restore balance and encourage healthy growth.

The presence of pests or diseases is also an indicator that trimming may be required. Certain tree species are susceptible to pests that can cause damage to branches and leaves. Regular trimming can help prevent the spread of diseases and infestations by removing affected areas promptly, which is best done with the expertise of tree companies.

          1.2 Risks of Overgrown Branches

Overgrown branches not only pose a risk to personal safety but can also damage property. During strong winds or storms, these branches can break and fall, causing injury or harm to structures within your yard. Additionally, overgrown branches can interfere with power lines, potentially leading to power outages or fires. Hiring a tree trimming service to manage these risks is crucial for your home's safety.

Overgrowth can also hinder the growth and health of the tree itself. When branches become too dense, they can block sunlight from reaching other parts of the tree, reducing the tree’s ability to photosynthesize efficiently. This can lead to poor health and may eventually kill the tree. Professional trimming helps ensure that trees maintain healthy access to sunlight and nutrients.

Moreover, overgrown branches can compete with other elements in your garden for resources. They can overshadow smaller plants, take up nutrients, and even affect soil moisture levels. The expertise of tree companies in precise trimming ensures that your entire garden thrives alongside your trees.

Benefits of Hiring Professional Tree Companies

          2.1 Expertise and Experience Offered

Hiring professional tree companies provide you with access to experienced arborists who understand the intricate needs of different tree species. These professionals have extensive knowledge about tree biology, growth patterns, and the best trimming techniques. Their expertise ensures that tree trimming is done in a manner that promotes health and minimizes harm. This results in aesthetically pleasing trees and a safe environment for your yard.

Professionals can also identify issues that may not be apparent to the untrained eye. By conducting a thorough inspection, they can spot early signs of disease or pest infestations and recommend suitable interventions. Unlike DIY approaches, hiring professionals assures you that your trees receive the best care available. Their experience is invaluable in executing precise cuts that contribute to healthier growth.

According to IBISWorld, through 2030, tree trimming industry revenue is projected to increase at a CAGR of 2.1% to $43.7 billion, reflecting the growing reliance on specialized services. This growth also denotes the trust homeowners place in professionals for their tree care needs. As the industry expands, the quality of services provided by tree companies continues to improve, further justifying their engagement.

          2.2 Safety Measures and Equipment

Tree trimming involves risks that require the use of specialized equipment and safety protocols. Professional tree services are equipped with the latest tools and machinery designed for safe and efficient tree trimming. This equipment allows them to reach difficult areas and perform the trimming without risk to themselves or the surrounding property. Engaging tree companies mitigates the chance of accidents and ensures compliance with safety standards.

Aside from equipment, professional trimmers undergo rigorous training, preparing them for various situations they might encounter on the job. Their awareness of potential hazards, such as power lines and unstable branches, equips them to handle trimming tasks that would be dangerous for amateurs. Safety measures instituted by professionals protect both the workers and the homeowners’ property.

Moreover, hiring professional services relieves the homeowner of liability in case of accidents or mishaps during the trimming process. With proper insurance and liability coverage, you are assured that any unforeseen events are handled responsibly by the company. This emphasizes the importance of only working with reputable and insured tree companies.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Tree Company

          3.1 Certifications and Credentials

When selecting a tree company, it is crucial to verify their certifications and credentials. Certified arborists have undergone specific training and testing to ensure they meet industry standards for tree care and knowledge. Credentials such as the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification are widely recognized in the industry. Employing certified professionals provides assurance that your trees are in qualified hands.

Reviews from past clients can also offer insight into the company's professionalism and efficiency. Positive feedback often correlates with a history of delivering excellent service, while negative reviews might highlight red flags. A company known for employing certified arborists will likely have favorable evaluations from satisfied customers.

Furthermore, credentials may also indicate a tree company’s commitment to ongoing education and adherence to the latest safety and care practices. Companies investing in continuous training tend to provide higher quality services. Prioritizing certified tree companies ensures your trees receive optimal treatment and care.

          3.2 Understanding the Company’s Insurance

Checking whether a tree company carries appropriate insurance is essential to protect against potential liabilities. A reputable company will have general liability insurance to cover property damage and injuries that might occur during the job. Worker’s compensation insurance is also crucial, safeguarding both the workers and yourself in case of accidents. Requesting proof of insurance can avoid taking undue risks in hiring tree services.

Insurance not only protects your property but also demonstrates the company’s professionalism and accountability. Tree companies that maintain comprehensive insurance policies show their dedication to customer satisfaction and responsible service provision. This assurance is invaluable in fostering trust and reliability.

In sum, understanding and verifying a company’s insurance status helps provide peace of mind. It ensures you will not be held financially responsible for accidents that could happen during trimming. This knowledge empowers you to make informed decisions when selecting a service provider.

Removing a tree from your property is not a small decision. Whether the tree is diseased, damaged, dangerously close to your home, or simply no longer fits your landscape plans, hiring a professional tree removal company is often the safest and most efficient option. However, not all companies offer the same level of expertise, safety standards, or customer service. Before you sign a contract or schedule service, it’s important to understand what goes into professional tree removal and what to look for in a reputable provider.

Kingkiner Tree Service understands that homeowners want clarity, safety, and value when investing in tree removal. By knowing what to expect from a professional tree removal company, you can make an informed decision that protects your property, your budget, and your peace of mind. Here’s what you should know before moving forward.

The Importance of Hiring a Professional Tree Removal Company

Tree removal may look straightforward from a distance, but it’s one of the most dangerous tasks in property maintenance. Cutting down a large tree involves specialized equipment, strategic planning, and a deep understanding of how weight distribution and gravity will affect the fall. Without proper training, even a seemingly simple removal can result in severe property damage or personal injury.

A professional tree removal company brings expertise and safety protocols to every job. Trained crews assess the tree’s health, structure, and surroundings before making a single cut. They evaluate nearby power lines, buildings, fencing, and landscaping features to determine the safest approach. This careful planning minimizes risk and ensures the tree is removed in a controlled and efficient manner.

In addition to safety, professionals carry insurance coverage that protects you from liability. If an accident occurs during the removal process, a properly insured tree removal company helps shield homeowners from unexpected financial responsibility. That level of protection alone makes hiring professionals the smart choice.

Signs That Tree Removal Is Necessary

Before contacting a tree removal company, it’s helpful to recognize when removal is truly needed. Not every unhealthy-looking tree must come down, but certain warning signs indicate a serious issue. Trees that lean significantly, show large cracks in the trunk, have extensive dead branches, or exhibit signs of disease may pose a hazard.

Root damage is another major concern. If you notice heaving soil around the base or exposed roots that appear damaged, the tree’s stability may be compromised. Severe storm damage can also weaken a tree’s structural integrity, making it unsafe to leave it standing.

A qualified tree removal company will perform an on-site evaluation to confirm whether removal is the best course of action. In some cases, trimming or targeted pruning may solve the problem. A reputable provider will always recommend the safest and most practical solution rather than pushing unnecessary removal.

The Cost of Hiring a Tree Removal Company

One of the most common questions homeowners have involves cost. The price of hiring a tree removal company varies based on several factors, and understanding them can help you avoid surprises. Tree height and trunk diameter are primary considerations. Larger trees require more labor, equipment, and time to remove safely.

Location also plays a significant role. Trees situated close to homes, garages, fences, or power lines require more precise techniques and sometimes additional equipment like cranes. Accessibility matters as well. If crews must navigate narrow spaces or difficult terrain, the complexity increases.

Another factor is whether you want stump grinding included. Some homeowners choose to remove only the tree, while others prefer to eliminate the stump to restore their yard’s appearance. When requesting an estimate, be sure to ask the tree removal company for a detailed breakdown, so you understand exactly what services are included.

The Timeline for Professional Tree Removal

Many homeowners worry that tree removal will disrupt their daily routine for days. In most cases, that’s not necessary. According to This Old House, typically, professionals can complete the job in one day unless there are multiple trees to cut or the location is difficult to access. This efficiency is one of the benefits of hiring an experienced tree removal company.

The process usually begins with site preparation. Crews set up safety zones and position equipment strategically. The tree is then cut down into sections, especially for larger specimens. Removing a tree in controlled pieces helps prevent damage to nearby structures and landscaping.

Cleanup is typically included in the service. A reputable tree removal company will haul away debris, branches, and trunk sections, leaving your yard tidy. If stump grinding is part of the project, that may add a bit more time, but most single-tree jobs are completed within the same day.

Licensing, Insurance, and Safety Standards

Before hiring any tree removal company, verifying credentials is essential. Proper licensing indicates that the company meets local and state requirements for operating legally. Insurance coverage, including general liability and workers’ compensation, protects both the homeowner and the crew.

You should never hesitate to ask for proof of insurance. A professional tree removal company will gladly provide documentation. This step is critical because tree removal involves chainsaws, heavy equipment, and elevated work. Accidents, while rare with experienced teams, can happen. Adequate insurance coverage ensures you’re not held responsible for injuries or property damage.

Safety standards extend beyond insurance. Professional crews use protective gear, secure the work area, and follow industry best practices. When evaluating a company, ask about its safety procedures and training programs. A company that prioritizes safety demonstrates professionalism and commitment to quality service.

The Importance of Experience and Equipment

Experience matters tremendously in tree removal. An established tree removal company has likely handled a wide range of scenarios, from storm-damaged trees to removals in tight residential neighborhoods. This experience translates to better judgment and smoother project execution.

Modern equipment also plays a key role. Professional-grade chainsaws, rigging systems, cranes, wood chippers, and stump grinders allow crews to work efficiently and safely. Attempting to remove a tree with inadequate tools increases both time and risk.

When researching a tree removal company, consider how long they’ve been serving the community and what types of equipment they use. A well-equipped team can adapt to unique challenges and ensure your property remains protected throughout the process.

The Role of Permits and Local Regulations

Depending on your location, tree removal may require permits or approval from local authorities. Some municipalities protect certain species or regulate the removal of trees above a specific size. Failing to comply with these regulations can result in fines.

A knowledgeable tree removal company understands local requirements and can guide you through the process. In many cases, they will handle permit applications on your behalf. This not only saves time but also ensures compliance with all applicable laws.

Before scheduling removal, ask whether a permit is required for your property. A reputable tree removal company will provide clear answers and assist with any necessary documentation.

The Value of Clear Communication and Written Estimates

Professionalism extends beyond cutting down trees. A trustworthy tree removal company communicates clearly from the first consultation to project completion. You should receive a written estimate outlining the scope of work, total cost, timeline, and any additional services.

Clear communication helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures everyone is on the same page. If changes arise during the project, such as discovering internal decay that affects the removal process, the company should inform you promptly.

Reading online reviews and asking for references can also provide insight into how a tree removal company treats its customers. Consistent positive feedback often indicates reliability, punctuality, and quality workmanship.

Hiring a professional tree removal company is an important decision that impacts the safety, appearance, and value of your property. By understanding why professional expertise matters, recognizing the signs that removal is necessary, evaluating cost factors, verifying credentials, and ensuring clear communication, you can confidently choose the right team for the job.

6 Common Mistakes Homeowners Avoid by Hiring a Tree Trimming Service

Avoid costly mistakes and safety risks. Learn why hiring local tree companies for professional tree trimming protects your property, health, and trees.

Tree trimming is often viewed as a simple weekend project, but in reality, it requires a level of expertise that most homeowners do not possess. Trees are living structures with complex growth patterns, health needs, and safety risks that are easy to overlook without proper training. When homeowners attempt trimming on their own, they frequently make mistakes that can permanently damage trees, create safety hazards, or result in costly property repairs. Professional tree trimming services exist to prevent these issues while supporting healthy, attractive landscapes. As demand grows for safer and more effective tree care, local tree companies have become an essential resource for homeowners who want long-term results without unnecessary risk.

          1. Improper Pruning That Harms Tree Structure

Improper pruning is one of the most common mistakes homeowners make when trimming trees themselves. Removing too many branches can deprive a tree of the leaves it needs to produce energy, weakening its overall structure and leaving it vulnerable to disease. On the other hand, removing too little allows dead or diseased branches to remain, increasing the risk of breakage and pest infestations. Professional trimmers understand how to strike the right balance, ensuring trees retain enough foliage to remain healthy while eliminating growth that threatens stability.

Tree species grow differently, and failing to account for these natural patterns often leads to poor outcomes. Local tree companies are trained to recognize species-specific structures and growth habits, allowing them to make precise cuts that support long-term development. They also understand where cuts should be placed to encourage natural healing. Incorrect cut placement can slow recovery, invite decay, or create weak regrowth. By using proper tools and techniques, professionals protect the structural integrity of trees and help them thrive rather than decline.

          2. Ignoring Safety Risks During Trimming

Tree trimming is inherently dangerous, especially when it involves tall trees, heavy limbs, or unstable growth. Many homeowner injuries occur when individuals attempt to climb trees or ladders without proper safety equipment. Falls can result in serious or even fatal injuries. Professional crews are trained to work at heights using harnesses, lifts, and controlled cutting techniques that dramatically reduce risk.

Power tools introduce additional hazards. Chainsaws and pole saws require skill and experience to operate safely. Without training, homeowners face a high risk of injury or accidental property damage. Local tree companies invest in safety education and follow strict protocols to ensure tools are used responsibly. Trees growing near power lines pose an even greater danger, as improper trimming can result in electrocution. Professionals understand clearance requirements and safety regulations, allowing them to manage these situations safely and effectively. Hiring experts eliminates many of the dangers associated with DIY trimming.

          3. Causing Property and Landscape Damage

Property damage is another frequent consequence of inexperienced tree trimming. Falling branches can damage roofs, siding, windows, or gutters if cuts are not carefully planned. Professionals evaluate each tree and determine how limbs should be removed to avoid contact with structures. This controlled approach protects homes while still achieving the desired trimming results.

Landscaping features are also at risk during tree trimming. Gardens, shrubs, and decorative elements can be crushed by falling debris when homeowners lack proper planning. Local tree companies take time to assess the surrounding area and use methods that guide branches safely away from sensitive features. Driveways and walkways are particularly vulnerable to cracking when heavy limbs fall uncontrolled. Professionals use sectional cutting and rigging techniques to prevent impact damage, preserving pavement and reducing repair costs. This level of care ensures tree trimming enhances property value rather than diminishing it.

          4. Overlooking Tree Health Issues

Tree health requires ongoing observation and specialized knowledge. Diseases and pest infestations often develop gradually, making them difficult for homeowners to detect early. By the time symptoms are visible, damage may already be extensive. Professional arborists are trained to identify early warning signs and recommend appropriate treatments to prevent further decline. They can also assess subtle changes in leaf color, bark texture, or growth patterns that indicate underlying problems. Early intervention not only preserves the tree’s health but can also save homeowners from costly removal or replacement expenses.

Soil conditions, nutrient levels, and watering practices also affect tree health. Different species require different care strategies, and improper fertilization or watering can weaken trees over time. Local tree companies assess environmental conditions and provide guidance tailored to each tree’s needs. Pest management is another area where professional expertise matters. Rather than relying on harmful chemicals, professionals often use targeted, environmentally responsible treatments. This comprehensive approach ensures trees remain healthy, resilient, and capable of withstanding environmental stressors.

          5. Neglecting Long-Term Growth and Stability

Trees are long-term investments that require thoughtful care over many years. Seasonal growth cycles determine when pruning should occur, and trimming at the wrong time can interfere with natural development. Professionals understand these cycles and schedule work to minimize stress while encouraging healthy regrowth. Proper timing also helps trees heal more efficiently, reducing the likelihood of disease or pest intrusion. Over time, this strategic approach supports stronger branch structure and more balanced growth. Consistent, well-timed care ensures trees continue to add value and beauty to a property for decades.

Structural stability is especially important for mature trees. Poorly maintained trees are more likely to fail during storms or high winds. Local tree companies identify weak branch unions, overcrowded canopies, and uneven growth patterns that can compromise stability. Strategic pruning improves airflow and light penetration, strengthening the tree and reducing the risk of disease. By focusing on long-term health rather than short-term appearance, professionals help trees remain safe, strong, and attractive throughout their lifespan.

          6. Failing to Consider Environmental Impacts

Tree trimming decisions affect more than individual properties; they also impact local ecosystems. Professionals consider wildlife habitats when trimming, preserving nesting areas and shelter whenever possible. This balanced approach supports biodiversity while maintaining tree health. Thoughtful trimming can help sustain pollinators, birds, and small mammals that rely on trees for food and protection. By making informed decisions, professionals minimize disruption to natural cycles within the landscape. This careful planning allows trees and surrounding wildlife to coexist in a healthier, more resilient environment.

Waste management is another important environmental consideration. Professional crews recycle branches into mulch or dispose of debris responsibly, reducing landfill impact. Many local tree companies emphasize sustainable practices, using efficient equipment and minimizing environmental disruption. According to IBISWorld, the tree service industry is projected to reach $39.5 billion by 2025, reflecting increased reliance on professional, environmentally responsible care. By hiring experts, homeowners contribute to sustainable land management while preserving the ecological benefits trees provide, including carbon sequestration and improved air quality.

Attempting to trim trees without professional knowledge often leads to safety risks, property damage, and long-term harm to tree health. Hiring experienced professionals helps homeowners avoid these common mistakes while ensuring trees remain healthy, stable, and visually appealing.

Mulch isn't an absolute requirement for landscape trees, but it can provide a variety of benefits both for your landscape's appearance and for tree health. If you're planning to have your trees mulched, you'll want to know more about the process before you get started.

Here are some dos and don'ts to consider when you're planning to mulch your trees.

          1. Do spread mulch wide enough

A good layer of mulch can help protect your tree's roots from the greedy competition of grass roots. Although the tree's root ball may have looked tiny when you planted the tree, the roots will expand rapidly over the next few years, just as the branches will. Ideally you'll want the tree's mulch to be several feet wide, and you may want to expand it a little each year as the tree grows.

          2. Don't make mulch too thick or deep

While mulch can be a positive influence, more of a good thing isn't always necessarily better. If you make it too deep and pile it against the tree's trunk, mulch can start to break down in ways that could harm the tree. For instance, the mulch could harbor moisture and cause trunk rot, or could even provide living space for insects that could attack the tree.

          3. Do water trees even after mulching

You may have heard that mulch helps to conserve water and reduce evaporation. While this is true, it doesn't actually mean that your tree won't need supplemental water to drink, especially during hot, dry times of year. So make sure to water your trees regularly even if they're well-mulched.

          4. Don't use mulch from diseased trees

Piling mulch against the tree trunk isn't the only way mulch could harm your tree. It could also conceivably carry diseases from another tree (although this isn't common), if you're using wood chips as your mulching material. If you want to use wood chips, consider using chips that have already been composted, and don't use chips that you know came from a sick tree.

          5. Do consider organic mulch

Choosing organic products to use on and around your trees can be not only better for the environment, but better for you and your family and pets, and in some cases even better for your trees. Using organic mulches (such as compost or pine straw) that will eventually break down and help build up nutrients in the soil may be more beneficial in the long run than using a product that will last forever (such as rubber mulch).

          6. Don't forget to top off the mulch regularly

Once your tree mulch is in place, it will start to settle and degrade. If it's a natural material such as pine needles, it will start to biodegrade and will eventually stop being a mulch and start being a great growth medium for grass. You want to keep an eye on your mulch and add a fresh layer each year if needed so the mulch will keep providing protection against grass and weeds.

These dos and don'ts of mulching will help you to navigate this important aspect of tree care and provide the maximum benefit to your trees while avoiding any inadvertent damage.

    1. Make a diagram of the yard layout to find safe spots

First you'll need to sketch out a diagram of the property. It should indicate:

    • Your house

    • Water supply pipes

    • Drain or sewer lines

    • Well and entire septic system if applicable

    • In-ground pools

    • Asphalt or concrete such as a driveway

These structures can all be damaged by tree roots if you place the tree too close. So sketch them out and look for any spots on the property that are set well back from each of these items. A distance equivalent to the tree's eventual height once it's full-grown should be a good rule of thumb.

    2. Consider benefits of trees versus other shade sources

Shade trees are just one option for shading windows and siding. You can also choose hedges, shade sails, awnings, retractable solar screens, vine-covered trellises, or tall flowering bushes. Some of these work better for certain shade applications than others do.

For example, solar screens are just for windows, whereas a hedge would work better for shading a wall since you don't want to block your view with a permanent hedge right outside the window. So research your other options and make a list of the pros and cons, then compare that to what you'd gain from a tree and what the potential risks are.

    3. Decide if you're willing to wait for the trees to grow

Planting trees is a long-term investment. Even if you plant a tree in just the right spot so it will shade your windows at the right time of day and the right time of year once it's matured a bit, you may have to wait three to ten years before you see significant shading. It might take even longer to provide the amount of shade coverage you were hoping for. If you want something faster, consider one of the other options, like vines or awnings.

    4. Consider each tree's growth needs

Different trees do well in different types of soil and have different light and water requirements. In addition, some trees require more pruning than others. Consider whether your potential planting spots have what it takes for the tree you plant to survive there. Then consider whether you're willing to give the tree the pruning and other services it needs to thrive.

    5. Look for a good tree care contractor

One of the good things about tree care is you don't necessarily have to go it alone. If you can find a good tree care contractor in your area, they'll be able to advise you and even do most of the hard work for you. Finding a good tree care contractor can cement the idea that your yard is destined for more trees.

These steps will help you consider the main points for and against adding shade trees, and compare trees' needs and benefits to your needs and situation.

At last – you've been waiting all winter, and finally spring is coming. The snow is melting, your garden beds are back, and you can almost taste the burgers you're going to grill in backyard parties this spring and summer. Not quite so fast! Once winter is over, there are a few backyard cleaning tasks you need to do in order to prepare for the summer. Here's what homeowners should plan to do on the earliest clear, warm day to ensure their yards are prepared for the spring season.

      1. Get rid of winter debris.

In most backyards, there will be at least some winter debris such as fallen tree branches from snowstorms, litter or dog feces, and dead leaves or perennials. Remove all the debris you can, trim back dead plant matter, and make up for any winter preparation you missed out on doing now. If there's litter in your yard, watch out for broken glass and bring a garbage bag outside to handle it all.

      2. Tree Maintenance.

Winter can be hard on your trees and it’s while you’re bound to lose some very few years it’s important that when spring comes that you’re doing everything you can to ensure that your trees are in the best shape for a healthy summer. While most spring cleaning jobs can be done by the homeowner, with trees it’s best to leave it to the professionals. A tree service company local to your area know’s the types of trees in the region, diseases that are going around and they have all of the equipment to maintain your trees without causing a significant amount of damage to your property or the tree itself.

      3. Rake the lawn.

Even if you removed most of the leaves before the first snowfall, your lawn can still benefit from a good raking. You can remove pinecones and any small debris you missed, stray leaves, and dead grass. It will help control the buildup of thatch, and you'll see any particularly bare spots of lawn that might need to be reseeded or replaced with fresh sod.

      4. Clean up your garden beds.

Once your lawns are tidy, it's time to turn to garden beds. Make sure they're clear of clutter, too, and snip off dead leaves, stalks, and branches from perennials. Keep your scissors and pruners nearby for tight corners or large jobs, and be careful not to prune yourself. Check up on the best time to prune the shrubs, trees, and bushes in your yard – if it's now, go ahead and get started. As soon as perennials start pushing up, remove the mulch and divide them if necessary.

      5. Fertilize and plant.

If you need to get new lawns started or add new plants and it's after the last frost date, now's the time. Look up each plant's requirements for fertilizer and make sure your favorite shrubs have enough to eat. You may want to look at starting new garden beds now if you've been thinking about it and the ground isn't frozen.

      6. Clean out your shed.

Don't forget to take the time to clean out your shed or garage. It's a frustrating job that nobody likes doing, but you'll use your shed much more if everything is tidy and in its own place. Now is the easiest time to get rid of things you don't need by donating or throwing them away. You can toss any cracked sleds or snow shovels now and get a good deal on new ones.

The Bradford pear was first planted in the U.S. by the federal Department of Agriculture in Maryland in the mid-1960s. At the time, it was considered an excellent new option for ornamental landscaping. It's a colorful, attractive tree that grows quickly and easily in varying soil types.

First lady Ladybird Johson planted a Bradford Pear in downtown Washington, D.C., and proclaimed, "Few trees possess every desired attribute, but the Bradford ornamental pear comes unusually close to the ideal."

Since then, the Bradford pear's reputation has plummeted. It's now one of North America's most detested trees.

      Bradford Pear Trees Smell Bad

The Bradford pear belongs to the rose family of flowering plants. So, it would be reasonable to expect some pleasant-smelling flowers. At the very least, you'd hope for a neutral smell.

Unfortunately, Bradfords are one of the few trees that have achieved notoriety for exuding a truly offensive odor.

The smell comes from the pretty white flowers that bloom in the spring. It's an aroma most often compared to fish, or, more specifically, rotting fish.

The rotting smell likely comes from the amines trimethylamine and dimethylamine. It's thought that the tree emits these scent compounds to attract beetles and flies that can serve as pollinators.

Bradford Pear Trees Have Weak Branches

Bradford pears are fast-growing, disease-resistant, and develop a stable symmetrical shape. However, they have a major structural flaw that impairs their practicality as an ornamental species: weak branches.

Folks living among lots of Bradford pear trees are used to the same sight after every storm--lawns, streets, and sidewalks littered with fallen branches.

The problem is caused by weak branch unions. Limbs grow thin, without a durable connection to the trunk. As the branches grow, they're prone to snapping and splitting under the weight they support.

During heavy storms, many of a Bradford pear's weak branches give way, and often even the trunk or primary branches may break off or split open.

Bradford Pear Trees Are an Invasive Species

Despite its flaws, the Bradford pear would likely remain somewhat in favor if not for its worst offense: it's a rapidly spreading, harmful, invasive species.

Bradford pear trees are native to Vietnam and China, and thus are non-native in North America. Being non-native is not necessarily problematic; many non-native plants and trees are used for ornamental landscaping and other purposes without causing trouble.

Over time, ecologists and other experts formed a broad consensus that Bradford pear is an invasive species.

Originally, Bradford pears planted in the U.S. were hybrid cultivars that couldn't, in theory, reproduce. However, a wide variety of cultivars were planted in massive volume, which led to cross-pollination and the production of viable seeds.

Birds and other wildlife have developed a taste for Bradford pear fruit. As a result, seeds are spread far and wide. Bradford pears have proven adaptable and dominant in many habitats where their seeds are deposited. As a fast-growing, resilient, non-native species, these trees outcompete native species, leading to ecological decline.

Bradford pears are now a common sight throughout much of the U.S., including the Southeast, Northeast, and Midwest. You'll see them not only in landscaped front yards but as invasive intruders in many wild landscapes.

If you're looking for an ornamental tree to plant, you've got lots of options besides the invasive Bradford pear. You'll be doing your community and local ecosystems a favor by choosing a native species.

What to plant in place of a Bradford pear depends on where you're located, but there are lots of wonderful, attractive, native trees that can serve as ornamentals but don't smell bad, fall apart during storms, or harm local ecosystems. Some, like downy serviceberry, will even provide edible fruit.

The Bradford pear won't be cleared out of the country any time soon, but its sale is already banned in several states and discouraged just about everywhere.

Your roof gutters are very important as they will help to remove rainwater and small pieces of debris off your roof and through your downspouts. Unfortunately, gutters can slowly accumulate dirt, leaves, and other debris. They are also common places for pests to create nests and make a home. If the gutters are clogged, it can lead to a buildup of water and cause damage. To ensure this does not happen you should have your gutters cleaned out at least a couple of times per year. You can also easily help by cleaning and rinsing out your downspouts once per month.

      Remove Large Items from Roof

It is also a good idea to remove large items from your roof on a regular basis. Large branches and other pieces of debris may remain stationary until they are removed by hand. These items can lead to damage, particularly when the weather turns and they begin to freeze. Due to this, you should inspect your roof regularly and make sure that it is properly cleared of these items.

One of the most common reasons why your roof could incur some areas of damage is because of overhanging trees. Large tree branches that hang over your roof will drop leaves, branches, and other debris regularly. They also provide an easy access point for squirrels and other pests that have the habit of digging into your roof or clogging gutters. Having the trees trimmed regularly can help prevent a lot of potential roof challenges.

If you live in an area that gets a lot of snow during the winter, doing your best to clear some off the roof is helpful. A significant accumulation of snow can put a lot of stress on the roof, cause leaks, and create ice dams. Through the use of a roof rake, you can help to remove some of the snow and avoid various roof challenges.

Ultimately, caring for your roof is a great way to ensure it will last and continue to protect your home. These tips are great examples of ways that someone can maintain and protect their roof. This can help you extend the useful life of your roof and gutters and allow you to avoid a variety of other home repairs.

If you have a bunch of overgrown trees or misshapen branches in your backyard, your first thought may be to grab your chain saw, climb a ladder and get to work. Unless you are a professional, chances are you would not be able to spot these common - and potentially dangerous - problems.

Better yet, hiring a professional tree trimming and pruning service means you will not inadvertently overlook a bigger problem - like the aforementioned dead trees and lurking termites. A dead tree could come crashing down in the next storm - and if the insurance company rules that you should have noticed the problem they may not pay to fix the damage. And of course a termite problem could literally eat you out of house and home.

Many non-professionals use the terms trimming and pruning interchangeably. They think that cutting is cutting, and that these two services are much the same. Professionals, however, know that there is a big difference.

When the staff at a professional tree service company talks about trimming, they are referring to the processes used to take care of the tree, while pruning has to do with the health and structure of the tree and the safety of the people living nearby.

Trimming and fine pruning can be used to change the way the tree looks - adapting its shape to be more attractive or altering its growth patterns to make it more convenient for the homeowner. Standard pruning is a bit different, involving more cutting and used to improve the overall structure of the tree.

The aptly named menace pruning is done to remove branches that could pose a safety risk to homeowners, visitors or the general public. A branch that is grown out over the road, for instance, could come down in a storm and endanger passing motorists.

When that dangerous growth is noticed, the homeowner - or the township - may call a professional to have the potentially dangerous branch pruned away. This type of pruning is also known as care pruning.

Crown reduction is another form or pruning, and it involves removing the branches on the top or side of the tree. This is often done to stop trees from growing into power lines or obstructing nearby buildings.

No matter what type of pruning or trimming your trees require, it is best to leave the work to the professionals. A professional tree trimming service will be able to assess the health of the trees on your property, make recommendations and do the work properly. Having your trees checked out now could prevent a disaster later.

If you have a damaged or diseased tree on your property, you may be wondering, "Is there a good tree service near me?" There are often many options listed in online directories, but a local tree company will always have specific knowledge that a distant service won't have. This information helps an arborist determine the best course of action after a tree risk assessment.

      1. A Local Arborist Knows the Weather

Understanding how weather patterns affect your trees involves a lot more than just checking your phone. An experienced arborist is used to working with the microclimate of their area, observing subtle changes and how they affect the local varieties of trees over time. For example, an arborist can tell you how windy conditions typically do or don't affect trees in your neighborhood. You could then choose between bracing and pruning without worrying that you will lose both your money and your tree.

      2. Professionals Target Specific Conditions

Your tree problems will vary according to where you live. In an urban area, the different types of pollution can affect your trees. Suburban homeowners are often concerned about animals and invasive plants. Qualified arborists target the insects and diseases that affect the specific type of trees in your neighborhood. They also know how to best fertilize for local soils and trees.

      3. Fast and Professional Service

Calling a tree service near you will save you both time and money. An arborist that is nearby can better fit you into the schedule because there is less travel time involved. Less travel for the professional means a lower job quote. If there is a tree protection ordinance in your area, the arborist would be familiar with how it works and how to best work with the city or county. They would also know about the need for permits or other bureaucratic issues that come up in your area, which prevents you from wasting time and money on legal issues.

So, if you have a tree in poor health and are unsure as to what you should do, call a tree service near you. A qualified professional can come out and use their refined knowledge of trees in your area to help you keep your landscaping in top shape. If you’re in the Philadelphia, West Chester, Villanova or other Delaware Valley Area please give us a call and let us be your local tree service professionals. The spotted lanternfly was first seen in the U.S. in Pennsylvania in September 2014. Since then, it's appeared in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and West Virginia. Scientists believe that it came to America on goods that were imported from Asia.

One of several states to have a quarantine on the SLF (spotted lanternfly) is Pennsylvania. At least 26 of its counties are under that directive. The state requires agricultural and non-agricultural businesses that transport products that can be infested by the insect to have a permit.

Among the items under stricter state control are construction, landscaping and remodeling materials; logs, stumps and tree parts; grapevines; nursery stock; crates, pallets and packaging materials; RVs and mobile homes; tractors and mowers; grills, deck boards; and vehicles not stored indoors. In addition to a watchful eye over items, Pennsylvania does not allow the movement of the SLF in any of its life stages: egg mass, nymph or adult.

Although the spotted lanternfly threatens many plant products, particularly apples, grapes, hops, walnuts and hardwood trees, it's been seen on at least 103 kinds of plants and trees. Add to the list rose, plum, river birch, willow, sumac, pine, silver maple, red maple and tree-of-heaven, an invasive plant.

The SLF damages in several ways. By sucking the sap from branches and stems, it weakens the host. In feeding, it leaves behind honeydew, which is a sticky substance that invites other insects. Honeydew also promotes the growth of sooty mold on plants and trees.

Adult spotted lanternflies (July to December) are about 1-inch long and 1/2-inch wide. An early nymph (widely seen from late April to July) is about 1/8-inch long, and it is black with white spots. A late nymph (prominent from July to September) is about 1/2-inch long, and it is black and red with white spots.

With wings wide open in its adult stage, the insect's forewings are graywith black spots, and its hind wings are gray with black spots. When someone or something disturbs it, the SLF shows its beautiful bright redunderwings.

When wings are closed, the insect is mostly graywith black spots. Newly laid egg masses look as if they are covered with a white substance. On more mature egg masses, the substance may turngray-brown. Very mature egg masses appear as rows of 30 to 50 seed-like structures in vertical columns.

The spotted lanternfly can't fly far, but it infests by landing on objects. That's why residents are urged to examine their vehicles and keep car and truck windows closed when parked. It's also suggested that people inspect trees, rocks, cement blocks, decks, and other hard surfaces for egg masses. Do the same for landscaping materials, lawnmowers and outdoor equipment that's being moved from one place to another.

Managing the pest includes scraping and destroying its eggs and killing the more mature insects. When residents find egg masses that have been laid on trees, rocks and blocks of cement in the months from September to June, they should scrape them off. Pour hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol into a freezer bag and scrape the pest into the bag with a plastic card or a putty knife. Dispose of the sealed bag. Residents can also smash egg masses.

Also look underneath cars and in wheel wells. Adult insects are ever-present in the months from July through late December. In searching for them examine trees and plants, especially at dusk and at night when the insects are more likely to be on trunks and stems. As with egg masses, one method of removing mature SLFs is by smashing them.

Other methods of control include removing plants and trees that the SLF feeds on, using tree traps to catch newly hatched nymphs and treating trees and plants with EPA-approved insecticides. On its website, the Penn State Extension evaluates some insecticides for both their effectiveness and toxicity to birds, fish and bees.

The spotted lanternfly poses threats to crops, agricultural jobs and commercial and residential trees and plants. It can also disrupt the comfortable lifestyles of residents. Vigilance and moving to prevent the spread of this invasive insect are necessary immediately.

Trees aren't just an attractive part of your landscape; they can also be an impressive force of nature. If your home gets in a tree's way while it's growing, or if part of a tree's structure fails and it falls onto your home, you could be in trouble.

Here are some of the ways a tree could damage your home, and how to avoid it from happening.

          1. Roots That Block Pipes

Tree roots are always on the lookout for water and nutrients, and your pipes contain both. Water supply pipes provide water, and sewer pipes have both water and sources of energy that trees can use (such as ground-up food debris, human waste, and so on). Trees that breach pipes can cause pipe clogs, leaks, and similar issues. Common root intrusion sites include joints, places where a pipe has already had a tiny leak that the root sniffed out, and clay pipes such as those often used for main sewer drains.

Preventing tree root intrusion is mostly a matter of making sure no trees are near enough to reach your pipes. If you can't do that (for example, if your pipes are near the property line and your neighbor has a tree nearby), you can also place a tree root barrier and root-killing chemicals underground around your pipes to protect them.

          2. Roots Below Foundation

Moisture is one of the most common problems for foundations. For example, if the soil around your foundation is too saturated, this exerts a lot of pressure on your foundation wall and can cause cracks and eventually failure. But too little moisture can also be a problem. For example, if a tree has roots spreading under one side of your house, these roots are likely to suck up the moisture from that area. This can mean that the soil under one side of your house settles more than that on the other side, because it dries out faster.

Settling that occurs unevenly is bad for your foundation and for your home's structure. While a small amount of settling is more or less inevitable for any foundation, the amount caused by a large tree on one side of your house can be a real structural issue; it can make the floors uneven, cause cracks in walls, and make doors and windows stick.

If you're noticing that these problems already exist in your home, you may need foundation repairs. But to prevent such problems in the future, you may need to remove the tree near your house; the larger it is, the more water it will suck from under the foundation.

          3. Debris Dropped on Roof

One of the most obvious dangers of a nearby tree is that it might fall on your house. But although that's a rare event and can only happen once per tree, dropping a large limb on your roof can also happen and could still mean hundreds of dollars of roof repairs. The larger the tree, the more limbs it could have extending over your home.

In addition, even if no large limbs drop, the myriad twigs and leaves that likely fall to your roof every day can cause problems all by themselves. The everyday friction can rub off the asphalt roofing's reflective granules, shortening the roof's lifespan, and any buildup of debris can hold water in place, increasing likelihood of water intrusion through the roof, especially in such vulnerable areas as roof valleys and the spot behind the chimney.

If at all possible, you should keep all tree limbs trimmed back away from your roof to minimize the potential for these problems. Cleaning debris off your roof regularly can also help by preventing debris buildup that could encourage water intrusion.

          4. Clogged Gutters Causing Water Damage

Even if the debris dropped by a tree doesn't stick on the roof, it can build up in the gutters. You probably clean out the gutters regularly as a part of home maintenance. But the more debris the tree drops, the more likely gutters are to clog.

Clogging up the gutters not only increases the chances that water can back up into your attic; it can also cause gutters to overflow, creating unsightly streaks on siding. And when water pours down the side of your house, it can also cause water damage such as erosion around your foundation or even water intrusion into your basement.

Fortunately, trimming trees back and cleaning your roof and gutters regularly can help prevent problems.

          5. Vegetation Providing Pest Pathways

Trees, shrubs, and similar vegetation all provide cover and habitats for pests that can eventually move into your roof and attic. Trees can also provide connections for pests such as squirrels and raccoons that wouldn't otherwise find their way onto your roof so easily.

To reduce or prevent these issues, keep trees and other vegetation trimmed back away from the house and use cameras to monitor for any pests outside so you can before they can move into your home.

Trees may have the potential to cause damage to your home, but the preventive measures listed here, such as tree trimming, can help you keep it from happening. You'll be able to enjoy your landscape trees in peace without worrying about potential damage to your home's roof, foundation, and gutters.

Winter can be rough on trees. Avoid future issues with your trees by preparing the plants for frigid temperatures before winter arrives. Ongoing tree care during the coldest months protects trees even further. Follow these steps to get your trees ready for chilly weather and keep them healthy until spring.

Clean Up Debris to Avoid Tree Diseases and Damage

Fallen limbs, messy leaves, and scattered pine cones are unsightly. Debris from trees can also spread plant diseases. Some insects, fungi, and other plant killers overwinter in fallen limbs and leaf piles.

Clean up all tree debris around your trees to create a more sanitary living environment for the plants. Any infections or insect infestations in tree matter will be less likely to migrate to healthy trees when you remove dead branches and other fallen debris from the bases of your trees.

Yard cleanup in autumn also helps you spot small seedlings that sprout from acorns and other tree seeds. When spring arrives, your autumn cleanup efforts mean less work pulling up baby trees you don't want in your landscape.

Water Trees to Insulate Trees and Warm the Soil

Water insulates the interior of trees during the winter months. Tree experts advise property owners to water their trees well in autumn to fully hydrate the plants.

Tips to water trees in autumn include the following:

Water trees from trunk to outer edges of leaves.

           Water trees slowly.

Water at a rate of 10 gallons per inch of trunk diameter.

It's okay to water trees in the dead of winter, too. Winter watering helps keep tree roots supple and strong. Water your trees during middle and late winter when your cold-weather climate is also dry. For example, if there's no snow on the ground to melt into the soil, your trees need hydration. Wait for warm winter days to water your trees. When the temperature outside reaches 40 degrees, it's a good time to pull out the hose and soak the ground around your trees. Pay special attention to saplings and other young trees when you water. Newer trees don't have extensive root systems yet, so they may need additional watering throughout the winter months.

Add Mulch to Insulate and Prevent Moisture Loss

A layer of mulch around the base of a tree helps keep the soil moist by preventing evaporation of water around the tree's roots. Mulch also helps insulate the soil around roots to keep the soil frozen. If soil warms up too much from abundant winter sunlight, trees are at risk of root damage or winter die-back from breaking dormancy too early.

Mulches are classified as organic and inorganic. Organic mulches are recommended by most tree experts and include the following materials:

           Leaves

           Pine needles

           Wood chips

           Tree bark

           Compost

           Cocoa hulls

Organic mulches are preferred over inorganic mulches, since organic mulches offer soil conditioning. The mulch components break down and add texture and additional nutrients to the soil.

Inorganic mulches are sometimes offered as one-piece mats or circles that surround tree bases. Inorganic mulches include the following materials:

           Pebbles

           Chipped stone

           River rocks

           Gravel

In addition, property owners can purchase rubber mulch products that resemble organic mulches like tree bark or wood chips. Inorganic mulches don't provide soil conditioning or nutrients to trees, but they do protect trees from foot traffic, machinery, and excessive weed growth around tree bases. If rodents are a problem in your area, wait until a hard freeze to mulch trees. Small rodents won't take up residence under the mulch by then, because they find their winter nesting spots during the warmer autumn months. Mulch should not be in direct contact with the trunks of trees, since the trunk and adjacent base roots need oxygen to stay healthy. Mulch trees in the shape of a bagel rather than a small hill around the bottoms of trees.

Use Tree Wrap to Prevent Sunscald

Sunscald won't necessarily kill your trees, but it will make the tree trunks look bad. Sunscald occurs because cells in the tree trunk break dormancy on warmer winter days. The activated cells are prone to freezing as soon as the next frigid weather arrives, which can cause scarring and frost cracks on tree trunks. Some people paint trees white to keep the tree trunks from breaking dormancy. Tree experts recommend using horticultural tape on tree trunks instead. Unlike paint, the tape can be removed.

Follow these tips when wrapping trees:

Wrap the trunk from its base to the lowest branches.

Fall cleanup includes removing damaged or dangerous limbs from your trees. This preventative measure helps you avoid hazards from falling branches. However, most trees should be pruned in middle to late winter when the plants are fully dormant. Prune trees to improve the shapes of trees and offer more sunlight to the crown and interior branches. Prune each tree branch just above the tree node or branch collar, which is where a new branch emerges from a larger branch. On evergreens, prune lower branches to open up the bases of the trees. If you're not sure how to wrap, mulch, prune, or water your trees during winter, get in touch with the experts. Tree service professionals do the hard work for you and will advise you on how to give the best fall and winter care to your particular species of trees.
